Hey, neighbor!
Spokanites read RANGE for news that truly matters, investigations no one else tackles and to understand the real consequences on people’s lives from voices often ignored by other media.
It’s the place to go for people who love the Inland Northwest and care about news that holds our leaders accountable.
You won’t see a dozen stories a day from us. We only publish when it really matters.

Your neighbors think we’re great. We think you will too.
"I love that the RANGE reports on the nitty gritty: in-depth reporting [about] what's going on in your government at the local level [and] politics that affect you directly […] but has never gotten the reporting it deserves until now. Bravo!"
— Justin from Cheney
"RANGE is the only media outlet sharing detailed information about how to be civically engaged. I love knowing about what government meetings are happening and what's on the agenda (when they are made public). RANGE helps me stay informed and let's me know when my outrage needs to turn into advocacy."
— April from Spokane Valley
"Without you, investigative and civics reporting would be minimal, almost nonexistent, in Spokane."
— A RANGE Member from Liberty Lake

What you can expect
We send between 2 to 4 emails a week. Every single one is a banger.

Weekly updates on the issues and decisions being discussed by local government before they happen, so you know where and when to make your voice heard.

Timely explainers and breakdowns of big concepts, to demystify government and other complex systems that run our community.

Investigations and deep dives into everything from dangerous conditions at our local shelters to pollution cover-ups on the West Plains.

Written by working people, for working people
RANGE isn’t owned by a hedge fund. We aren’t owned by a family that has moved in the corridors of power for over 100 years. We aren’t owned by millionaires or billionaires.
RANGE is owned by the working journalists who are chasing down stories every day, answering your questions, giving you more context on social media, and following up on stories to make sure our institutions are accountable to the people. (We also occasionally write marketing copy like this.)
None of us come from power and privilege. All of us became journalists to better understand how our world works — especially the stuff that happens in shadowy corners and behind closed doors.
So we write stories the way we would want to read them: in plain language that explains complicated processes and jargon to help normal people understand how power works.

Spokane is better with all of us
We fundamentally believe that a democracy is worthless if only a few voices get heard, and therefore the only way to make Spokane a place where everyone can thrive is to give everyone the tools to demand better. That’s why we started RANGE.
We write for common people and we respect your intelligence.
Business and governmental jargon keeps people out of vital conversations affecting their lives. We take time to explain complicated topics other outlets gloss over, because we want you to know more than what is happening. We want you to know why, who is behind it and how you can take action.
We engage with readers to go deeper.
There is always so much more information in a reporter’s head than can fit in a story, so we love engaging with our readers to answer specific questions and give even more context, whether that’s on social media, on our community Discord, or at our Office Hours meet and greet events.
We never paywall anything.
Spokane is home to all of us, and we all deserve to understand the things that impact our lives in a way that prepares us to advocate for ourselves and our communities. Newsrooms like ours need money to survive, but we fundamentally believe everyone deserves access to the news we make, regardless of your ability to pay.
We hope you support us not because you can’t read anything without paying, but because our work makes your life better, and Spokane better, and you want that work to continue.
