Spokane’s District 2, which covers the South Hill and much of the West Plains, has one of the most interesting city council races this year: two Democrats are running against each other for the seat left open with no incumbent.
The two candidates vying for the seat are former prosecutor Kate Telis, who was the volunteer coordinator for Spokane City Council Member Paul Dillon’s 2023 campaign, and businessman Alejandro Barrientos, a father and chief operations officer for the Larry Stone-owned company SCAFCO Steel Stud Manufacturing.
So often, folks vote down simple party lines (even though city council races are technically non-partisan), but in a race with two candidates from the same party, we thought we’d let their positions speak for themselves.
We asked both candidates to give us brief, clear answers (think something that could fit in a tweet) to 20 questions about some of the key issues emerging for voters this year: Should public transit be free? What protections for renters do they support? Why are they running for office?
All that and more in this handy chart, and if this isn’t enough to help you make your choice, don’t worry: we’ll have more detailed coverage on this race before election day.
